Sticks and torches
A very quiet crossing in a residential area in Tokyo. Except for a tourist with an odd sock, nothing noticable to see.
Though there is. As soon as traffic occurs a man in safety top, with helmet and stick come to action. He is herre in this street as there is the righthand car is parked there for construction activities in the house. As explained before, parking in the street is prohibited. If parking in the streeet is inevitable a man with a stick is essential.
Thus the car is directed safely around the corner.
On larger projects more man are available. Here we see two in light blue shirt, one in safety top. Although the job is not very challenging the men stay very alert and they don't mind to offer their services to those participating in traffic not directly related to the reason of their presence at all.
When things become really hazardous, the sticks are replaced with flags. Here a new wire is mounted to the poles.
Not only in temporary situations men (always men) with sticks are present. Though in Japans traffic decent driving seems normal, many a zebra has man available. Also parking exits often have one emplyed to provide safe merging with the traffic.
This zebra down town has traffic lights. And two specialst man with flags for the kids.
At night the sticks are lit. This man guards his colleagues sticks for the time.
When the firebrigade goes out, the men join of course. Two version we see, black or light brown.
When on certain locations initiatives are not necessary also in Japan this version is chosen. For the remaining: safety first.
